Our Trust, Our People: Employee Awards 2024

Colleagues from across Redhill Academy Trust including shortlisted nominees from The Oakwood Academy gathered in style for the first ever Our Trust, Our People: Employee Awards.

The sophisticated surroundings of East Midlands Conference Centre were the perfect setting for the celebration. Across 12 award categories there were stories of true professionalism, teamwork and dedication to education as each of the 40 nominees received their moment in the spotlight - from teachers and leaders to apprentices, pastoral staff and governors.

The event showcased the superb work and effort that so many of our staff give to support our students every day. Hundreds of nominations were submitted earlier this year by supportive colleagues across our 16 schools, demonstrating the high calibre of staff working across Redhill Academy Trust. The shortlist was then whittled down to 40 and winners decided by a panel of judges.

Opening the proceedings, Trust CEO Andrew Burns said: "This evening we will honour and celebrate the effort, dedication, innovation and accomplishment of our outstanding staff and governors."

"All of the nominees here tonight should feel extremely proud that they have been recognised by their colleagues for their exceptional achievements."

One by one, the award winners were announced by compère for the night Adam Douglas, Redhill Trust's Sports Development Officer, with sparkling glass trophies presented by corporate sponsors, alongside Trust Director of Operations Richard Merryweather and Regional Director Tim Croft.

We were delighted that three of our incredible staff members were shortlisted for the final Awards:

Cathy Cumberpatch - Teaching Assistant of the Year
Cathy’s serene demeanour creates a positive and welcoming environment for everyone at The Oakwood Academy. She is always calm and has a lovely personality, making her a joy to be around. She consistently supports students, ensuring they feel valued and understood, and goes above and beyond to assist her team and colleagues at every opportunity.

Cathy’s unwavering support and encouragement foster a sense of unity and collaboration within the team. Her ability to remain composed under pressure and her genuine care for others make her an invaluable asset. Her dedication to the children and her colleagues underlines her commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive atmosphere.

Gemma MacNaughton - Co-Curricular
Gemma has tirelessly expanded the range of activities offered at The Oakwood Academy, transforming the co-curricular landscape and ensuring every student finds an outlet for their talents and interests. Her work with other colleagues to provide a range of activities has encouraged students to showcase their talents in music, theatre, and visual arts, fostering a vibrant and inclusive school culture.

Understanding the importance of leadership and teamwork, Gemma also introduced a Student of the Term award for each Faculty. Participation has led to improved academic performance, higher levels of self-confidence and a stronger sense of community amongst students.

Steve Hopkins - Governance Award
Steve’s commitment to the Trust and the academies he supports is unparalleled. He has given his time for over 20 years, after being persuaded to join the Redhill governing body! He later became Chairman and saw the school through academy conversion and the establishment of the Redhill Academy Trust. Steve was instrumental in helping to guide the Trust’s expansion and success while serving as Chair of the Board of Trustees for ten years.

We are delighted that we had two winners. Huge congratulations to Steve Hopkins, our dedicated and incredible Chair of Governors and our much loved, committed and incredibly knowledgeable Head of Learning Support Cathy Cumberpatch. It is great to see our staff recognised for the incredible work they do day in, day out to support our students, staff, parents and community.
